Fall is Here and Winter is Right Around the Corner
The Live Oak Fire Department of Sutter County would like to remind you of a few simple steps you can take to help you and your family be fire safe.
Time will fall back to standard time again on Sunday, November 6, 2011. This is a good time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Have chimneys inspected annually, and cleaned as necessary to reduce the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote buildup or obstructions in your chimneys.
Choose well seasoned wood that has been split for at least six months and stored in a covered and elevated location. Never burn Christmas trees in your fireplace or wood stove.
Keep all combustible materials at least 36” away from your fire place or woodstove.
Use electric blankets that have been approved by nationally recognized testing agencies like Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL).
Turn your electric blanket off when not in use. Many older models have no internal temperature control to shut the blanket off when it gets too hot. If your electric blanket has no such internal control, consider replacing it with a newer model.
Do not plug your heating blanket into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch; the blanket could be switched on accidentally.
Store electric blankets flat. If not possible, roll it up or fold it with as few creases as possible to protect internal coils
